School is out and summer is still in. Now is a good time to educate our teens about financial management. A practical way for them to learn is to get involved in summer jobs and similar money-making activities.

A summer job can offer the following advantages:

• Earn extra money – A summer job can give teens access to cash that they can use in spending for their needs or wants.
• Hone financial skills – Teens find the idea of budgeting and other financial principles difficult to grasp until they start to earn a salary of their own. Since it’s hard-earned money that they are using, they begin to weigh spending decisions more carefully and learn to prioritize needs over wants. Dealing with money matters also sharpens their math and numeracy skills.
• Provide practical exposure – A summer job is a good training ground for students in preparation for the workplace. It opens them to the “real world” and to facts of life such as taxes, for example. They learn that what they’re paid by the hour is not what they bring home but that these taxes, nonetheless, serve to benefit them in the future in the form of new roads, bridges, and basic services.
• Develop strong work ethics – Working in a summer job teaches teens to be responsible, show up on time for work, follow management’s orders, fulfill client expectations, and treat everybody with courtesy and respect. It likewise enhances their social skills.
• Guide career decisions – Teenagers may not know what career path to pursue. When teens are given the opportunity to check a work up-close, they can find out for themselves if there is a real fit for them.
• Build networks – Summer jobs provide a way for young people to connect with older, experienced business associates. A successful summer job may turn into a full-time job after graduation. Teens who have displayed positive work habits may also be referred by one company to another company in need of people.
• Build professional experience – Potential employers look for experience in resumés. A summer job, especially when relevant to a certain position, can be counted as work experience in the resumé and help teens land a better chance at their dream jobs.
• Make productive use of time– There’s a saying that an idle mind is the playground of evil. Working in a summer job helps teens to focus their attention to productive things and helps them to stay away from trouble.

Below are some ideas for summer jobs that teens may want to consider:
• Food service crew– Jollibee and McDonalds are the most common go-to places for summer jobs. Fast food chains hire students as service crew and bussers to assist especially during peak operating hours.
• Barista in coffee shops – So many students are fascinated by the concept of the coffee shops, enjoying a foamy frappe while hanging out there to study in groups. They may also find it fun and interesting to experience working there, either as baristas or cashiers.
• Part-time call center agents – The business process outsourcing (BPO) industry continues to post impressive growth. BPO companies such as the call centers are always hiring throughout the year where the main requirements are being conversant in English and willingness to go on shift. A part-time job in a call center presents a great opportunity to earn competitive pay, even for just a few months.
• Student assistants of faculties and departments – Teens don’t have to look far beyond their universities. Most of the time, different departments are in need of student assistants who can lend an extra hand in office and clerical jobs.
• English tutors to foreign nationals – There are many non-English speaking foreigners residing in our country who want to learn about the language. Filipinos are sought after as tutors as we are known to have a very good command of English grammar and diction. There are several ways to do this, either online, through private tutoring or teaching in a formal classroom.

Regardless of what job teens choose to engage in, a summer job presents the perfect opportunity for them to earn spending money and, at the same time, learn money management skills that would prove useful throughout their lifetime.

Summer is nearing its end and I’m now facing another great task of paying few bills which peak up unusually only after each summer…and here are some other lessons common to us all living in this kind of tropical country.

With the scorching heat of the sun, it is easy to rack up huge electric and utility bills to help make ourselves comfortable throughout the day. But before the bills start to arrive and make us sweat even more, let us ditch old habits and erroneous consumption practices. Below are friendly reminders for saving money on our electric and utility bills this summer:

• It is not enough to just turn off electrical appliances after use. Make sure you unplug all electronic devices, including cell phone chargers, from the socket. Many people are not aware of “vampire power” or the energy these devices can drain from our homes even when they are not in use.
• Have the filters of your air conditioning unit cleaned and your system checked by a professional to ensure that it is functioning as efficiently as possible.
• Program your air conditioner so that it automatically adjusts temperature settings to energy-saving levels.
• If you can do without an aircon and shift to using electric fans, the better. Fans create a constant light breeze that may be enough to make a warm day comfortable. If it should help, put ice in a metal basin and place this in front of the fan to blow cool air in the room.
• Use white curtains and drapes to reflect heat.
• Open your windows to help air circulate inside the house. In the evening, as the night wind begins to flow inside your room, you can set your fan to low.
• Warm air rises, cold air sinks. You may want to consider sleeping in the lower parts of the house, in the ground floor or basement, if you have any, or even just on the floor where it is cooler.
• If it’s too hot to stay indoors during daytime, get out. Find a shady place in your backyard and set up a hammock where you can get a good doze amidst the afternoon breeze. This is way more practical than sleeping in the room with full-blast aircon.
• Go out and take a stroll in the mall and take advantage of the free cool air.
• Rather than spend the whole weekend in front of your computer, go out, socialize, and connect with others in a way that has nothing to do with power cords and networks.
• Summer’s not really the best time to do baking as the use of the oven gives off excessive heat and makes cooling devices work overtime, but the season is great for grilling and holding barbecue picnics with family.
• Give your dryer a break this summer. Hang your clothes under the sun where they will dry in no time.
• Other major appliances that guzzle a lot of electricity include the flatscreen TV and the refrigerator. If you haven’t done so in a while, cleaning all the dust clogging the coils behind or underneath your refrigerator unit can do wonders to its efficiency. Defrost it also as necessary.
• Instead of stocking up ice-cream and frozen delights in the freezer that consumes much electricity, snack on fresh and juicy fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, honeydew, turnips, grapes and cucumber. They’re not only delicious but healthy too.
• Use energy-efficient lights. Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescents or Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs).
• Retire appliances that are more than ten years old and replace them with energy-efficient ones. Look at the energy star ratings of appliances when shopping.
• Remember to conserve water all the time. Be conscious of your water use when taking a bath. Use low-flow showerhead or pail and dipper.
• Bathing your young children together can also save water. It is also more fun for them.
• Teach kids to close all faucets when not in use.
• Don’t leave water flowing endlessly while brushing or flossing your teeth and consider using a glass. This practice is good not only for our homes but also for our offices.
• Designate a permanent glass for drinking water instead of using several glasses in a day to save on water for dishwashing.
• Don’t let water run when doing the dishes. Fill one sink with wash water and the other sink with rinse water.
• Soak pots and pans instead of letting the water run while you scrub them clean.
• Use large amounts of water in the morning or during the coolest times of the day to avoid fast evaporation. Such activities include showering, doing the laundry and watering the garden.
• Recycle water by using wash water from fruits and vegetables to water indoor or outdoor plants. Save the rinse water from your laundry for cleaning certain parts of your house and garage.
• Check for any leaks in your pipes and fix them immediately.

There are countless other ways by which we can lower our energy and utility consumption. Doing so not only lowers the bills we pay but also cuts carbon emissions, lessens water wastage, improves our living conditions, and ultimately benefits Mother Earth by reducing her stress and saving her from rapid degradation. Save on Bills, Save the Planet, Save it for the Future Generations. Now isn’t that a cause we should all be working for?

Let’s talk about the wisdom of Mr. Warren Buffet.

Warren Buffett, primary shareholder, chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, is the world’s third richest man as of 2011 with an estimated net worth of approximately US$45 billion. He is regarded as the world’s greatest investor, having amassed significant wealth through his value investing philosophy. He is also famous for his personal frugality and philanthropy, having pledged 99 percent of his fortune to philanthropic causes primarily via the Gates foundation. So what can we learn about personal finance from a man they fondly call the Sage of Omaha?

• Warren Buffett pursues his passion. According to Buffett, the greatest luxury in life is doing what you love most. Nothing for him is more fun than running Berkshire so he doesn’t go running away from work for that much needed rest and recreation. In an interview broadcasted by CNBC, he was quoted as saying, “Success is really doing what you love and doing it well. It’s as simple as that. I’ve never met anyone doing that who doesn’t feel like a success. And I’ve met plenty of people who have not achieved that and whose lives are miserable.”

• Warren Buffet has a clear strategy for making money. Buffett believes that “The first rule of investing is don’t lose money; the second rule is that don’t forget Rule No. 1.” In the same CNBC interview, he shared the following fundamental tenets of investing, particularly in stocks:
o Invest in businesses you understand – A key component to Buffett’s staying power is that he doesn’t make uninformed decisions. Buffett takes his time studying stocks and makes decisions based on detailed research.
o Look for businesses that have a strong competitive advantage – Buffett is convinced that investing in stocks equates to owning a piece of the business and thus makes decisions based on the underlying business. He believes that if a business does well, the stock eventually follows.
o Buy stocks at a reasonable price (value investing) – Buffett likes to buy quality stocks at fair prices. Finding the right company at the right price with a margin of safety for unknown market risks is the ultimate goal.
o Buy stocks and hold them; patience pays. – For Buffett, being too fearful or greedy can cause investors to sell stocks at the bottom or buy at the peak and destroy portfolio appreciation in the long run.
o Look for honest, able management. Buffett is also interested in the management and its values and sees this as an important gauge when deciding to buy stocks.

• Warren Buffett has strong will and determination. Buffett worked several jobs in his childhood selling chewing gum and Coke, delivering newspapers and running a pinball machine business. Business, however, was not always rosy for Buffett and as some of his ventures did not prove successful, including the purchase of a Sinclair Texaco gas station in his early career, he did not lose heart but rather learned the lessons from those unfortunate experiences.

• Warren Buffett is frugal. Several references point that Buffett is notoriously frugal, residing in the same house in Omaha, Nebraska, that he bought in 1958 for $31,500. He is well known for his simple tastes, including McDonald’s hamburgers and cherry Coke, and his disdain for technology, including computers and luxury cars. He started displaying an interest in saving money even as a child and at the age of twenty had already accumulated US$9,800 in savings, a considerable amount to have in the 1950s.

• Warren Buffet gives generously. In 2008, Warren Buffett was already ranked as the richest person in the world with an estimated net worth of approximately US$62 billion. In 2009, after donating billions of dollars to charity, his rank went down to second with only Bill Gates ahead of him.

The example of Warren Buffett only demonstrates and reinforces the positive and admirable characteristics of millionaires as mentioned in the previous article. If you want to be like him, then you should act now. Start saving and investing early and when you have reached that level of success, be simple, humble and generous enough like Buffett, as this is what distinguishes a truly rich person from just a wealthy one.

The election polls just opened at 7 this morning but I’m not talking about it nor how rotten the politics in our country. I grew up in a country where this activity never flourished into something fruitful exercise of democracy and voice of the people. The corruption has gotten worse…all looking forward after this day to win back what they spent in the campaign process.

And I think it’s even worth talking about kids. Looking for ways to keep your kids busy and entertained this summer at little or no cost? Here are some suggestions:

• Neighborhood/community pool – One way to beat the summer heat is to go swimming with your kids but you don’t have to travel far and spend excessive amounts for such an activity. Check your neighborhood/community pool and enjoy the free amenities that come with living in your place.
• Backyard water park – In fact, you don’t need to go farther than your house. You can set up an inflatable pool in your own backyard. You may get the family-sized pool so that you can join your little ones in lounging in the water.
• Local park – Pack lunch and have a picnic at the park amidst the vast open space and endless skies and where your kids can enjoy playing with other kids in the playground. A reminder goes to parents to keep a tight watch over your children so that they don’t go missing.
• Museum – A visit to the museum is very educational and entails only a minimum entrance fee, if not free of charge.
• Movie date – This is another activity where you can save a lot from paying exorbitant entrance fees and spending for dining expenses. Set a date with the family and watch a DVD copy of the latest movie in your home while eating pizza or microwave popcorn.
• Board games – Is the extreme heat outdoors making you bored? Try playing board games such as chess, checkers, and Game of the Generals with your children for some mental challenge. There are also board games that teach money skills such as the classic Monopoly.
• Arts and crafts – Delight your kids and let their creativity flow by doing artworks made of paper, plastic, clay, yarn, sticks, or just about anything.
• Kitchen fun – There are numerous recipes for no-bake cakes and cookies that are easy-to-follow and safe for children to prepare. You can also teach them to make popsicles, ice candy, and halo-halo, which can be sold to neighbors and turned into a money-making activity.
• Gardening – You can ask help from your children in starting a vegetable garden in your backyard. Inspire their commitment to take care of this mini-garden until the vegetables are ready for harvest. Growing own vegetables may help to pique the interest of picky eaters.
• Kite-flying – No need to drive all the way to Subic to do this. You can fly a kite from any open space in your neighborhood. Flying a kite is great fun on a breezy day and can be quite relaxing.
• Biking – Recreational biking can be a very pleasurable bonding activity for a family. Again, this is something that you can do right in the confines of your neighborhood.
• Outdoor games – In this electronic age, children even as young as toddlers are already hooked to their smartphones, iPads and playstation portable (PSP). Whatever happened to the traditional outdoor games of piko, patintero, tumbang preso, taguan, habulang pulis, Chinese garter, touchball, siato, jumprope, jackstones, and sipa? Maybe it’s time we keep our local tradition alive and introduce our children to the games we played in our childhood. Even a few hours a week of spontaneous play outdoors improves children’s overall health, ensures they get enough Vitamin D or the sunshine vitamin, revs up their metabolism, strengthens their muscles, improves reflexes, facilitates listening and comprehension of game mechanics, sharpens problem-solving skills, enhances social skills, and makes it easier for them to make friends and deal with people in the future.
• Sports – If you’re the type of parent who is always busy with work, make time this summer to shoot hoops with your son or play badminton with your daughter. Encourage your children to engage in sports activities that should help to improve their body mechanics and coordination, develop teamwork, and build their confidence level as they learn to master a particular sport.
• Workshops – Here in the BSP, we are lucky to have the annual Summer Workshop for Children of BSP Employees. It’s free so let us take advantage of this program and enroll our kids in the various classes aimed at developing their general health and well-being.

One important thing to keep in mind when it comes to entertaining our kids – it doesn’t have to be expensive nor should it always take the form of new toys and gadgets. Older children readily appreciate activities that are novel to them while the younger ones are just happy to be spending time with you. So get ready and make this summer vacation a really memorable one for the whole family.

Have a happy summer!

Glad that my boss allowed me to take a day-off today. And after a sweet date with my girl the entire day, I have now the time to update my blog before hitting the bed.

Valentine’s Day – it’s that time of the year again when people go to great lengths, not to mention busted budgets, in efforts to please a partner, make him or her feel special, and to prove how much they care, sorts of pampering someone’s very special heart.

But showing your love for your partner on Valentine’s Day doesn’t need to be expensive. Lifted from various Internet sources are creative and fun ideas for celebrating Valentine’s Day that are just as romantic (maybe even more romantic) and yet won’t require you to spend a fortune:

• Set the alarm and surprise your partner with breakfast in bed. Complement it with a cut flower in a vase.
• Write “I love you” on the bathroom mirror using liquid soap or lotion.
• Stick love notes all over the house saying the many reasons why you love your partner.
• Paint the house red by decorating it with any red household items you may have (e.g., table napkins, pillow cases).
• Make a photo montage of your pictures together.
• Sneak in your partner’s bag or briefcase a love letter to give him or her a pleasant surprise at work.
• Draw a heart on your partner’s make-up mirror.
• Call your partner’s favorite radio station and request to dedicate a love song during the time he or she drives home from work.
• Fetch your partner from work, take a carefree stroll, and watch the sunset before going home.
• Treat your partner like a king or queen for a day. Spare him or her from doing assigned chores even for a day.
• Give handmade coupons of special favors you can do for your partner (e.g., a coupon for washing the dishes for one week or doing the laundry over the weekend).
• Relive your first date even if it was just in the pizza parlor or at the park. It will bring back lots of wonderful memories.
• Another option is to celebrate Valentine’s Day at home. Prepare a romantic candlelit dinner served with a bottle of wine. Dress up for the occasion.
• Make a sweet dessert of chocolate-coated strawberries or baked heart-shaped cookies and red velvet cupcakes.
• Watch your wedding video or look at your wedding album together. Reaffirm your love for each other by making new vows.
• Make a memory box and fill it with mementos of your dates and travels (e.g., movie passes, plane tickets, trinkets). You and your partner can go through the items one by one and reminisce the loving times you have shared.
• Have a picnic date in your garden. Serenade your partner with her favorite love songs or read out some love poems. Go stargazing.
• Set up a bubble bath. Give each other a soothing massage complete with aromatic scents and relaxing music.

Looking at the list, I’m proud to say I already did most of the stuff abovementioned, except for something about wedding. xD

In the end, love isn’t about what physical gifts or symbols you give (flowers, chocolates and diamonds). It’s about what you give by way of your time, your attention, your acknowledgment and your appreciation of the other person’s true worth and meaning in your life. None of these can ever be bought.

Have a Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!

Year 2012 is nearly over. A big year for me really, both in good and bad things that happened. Hurdled the Bar exams, got my second new car, nearly become a groom xD and got some promotions at work. Had learn how to be patient when taking care of my mom who was hit by a pedicab, lost my best friend, said goodbyes to my Uncles who passed away, and managed to get through lots of difficulties and troubles of heart. Nearly everything that flavored the year with happy and sad memories. And the end of the year is like a time for a big pause for me and for all of us I guess —that each of us really do have very colorful lives in our own different ways. And by this moment we simply can’t disregard the fact that each ending gives us the chance to change for better, to find new hope and new life. Life is never been an easy road, and those kinds of roads are there for us to be stronger each year after all those good and bad things. So this moment is also the time to say thanks to the Lord for all the blessings and guidance He bestowed on each of us. This is a big pause that is only saying to us we still need to do lots of good things. And for me, I’m going to take it slowly. I will cherish every moments. Love every lives that cross my path. And learn to be more good and useful….and be more closer to God.

Happy New Year!

As usual, I forgot to update my blog. Reasons? No big things really. Busy schedules and lots of happenings when all of us in our family are together in one place. And I don’t hate it. It’s really enjoyable actually, each of us tells stories that inspire us even more to look forward for the coming new year. We are a family of Christians but it’s always our goal to never be Christians by the book only, we learn how to be more Christians by helping others. And by helping others means doing everything we got and everything up to the best we can do. We don’t have to saints to know the reasons why Christmas is here every year. It’s not just about gift-giving. It’s more of knowing that this world is for betterment if people learn to give in, to share things, to let others feel they can be forgiven, to let others know that they too have something to share to this world’s wondrous magic. I think it’s love.

So Happy Christmas everyone!

Scene from the movie, Slumdog Millionaire

They say that to become a millionaire, you must think and act as millionaires do. Millionaires have certain qualities that set them apart from the rest. Below are characteristics common among millionaires, as gathered from various Internet sources, that are worth emulating:

· They are visionaries. Millionaires have a clear, distinctive vision of the future. For all their actions, they always have the end goal in mind.
· They think big. Thinking or visualizing is the first step to achieving one’s dreams. In order to achieve big, you must also be willing to think big. As a popular saying goes, “Shoot for the moon so that even if you miss, you have a good chance of landing among the stars.” Millionaires do just that.
· They are creative and innovative. Millionaires are often imaginative and skillful people with bright ideas always flowing in their heads. They leverage what they know and have and turn it into a lucrative endeavor.
· They have good business acumen. Millionaires have a sharp sense or intuition of what will work and what won’t; it is something that is just inherent in them.
· They are passionate. Millionaires do what they love to do and hardly ever think of it as a job. When you do what you love and love what you do, then it reflects in your output and in your dealings with people.
· They don’t stop learning. Millionaires have insatiable curiosity. They are always out to explore and learn new things. Most of them learn from people they admire and have mentors.
· They seize the day. Millionaires are action-oriented people. When they see an opportunity, they immediately grab it. They have a high degree of confidence and guts and are not afraid to take calculated risks.
· They value time. Millionaires are very conscious of their time. They know how to prioritize and allot more time to activities that they consider worthwhile. Remember the Pareto principle or the 80-20 rule where 80 percent of the results comes from focusing on the 20 percent critical activities.
· They are positive. Millionaires always see the glass as half-full. They believe that for every setback, there is an underlying opportunity. They are not afraid to fail and make mistakes but take roadblocks as essential building blocks to success.
· They build great teams. Millionaires recognize that they do not know everything and cannot do everything. Thus, they hire the services of specialized agencies and professionals, e.g. accountants and lawyers, who can do the work effectively and efficiently. They have great organizational skills – they know who to hire, who to keep and who to develop.
· They practice salesmanship. Millionaires have good social skills as they need to constantly present their ideas and persuade others to buy into them.
· They invest, not spend. Millionaires know the value of investing and reinvesting money. They know that the secret to wealth is not to work for money but to have money work for you. They are willing to make sacrifices now for the chance of achieving something greater in the future. Millionaires are very patient people.
· They are frugal. Contrary to popular belief, most millionaires live frugal lifestyles. They live within their means and choose to build wealth than waste it. For them, every peso counts.
· They are generous. Millionaires know the importance of sharing. Many have formed foundations and charitable institutions as a way of giving back to the community and giving back the glory to the Lord Almighty.
· They are leaders. As leaders, millionaires are able to inspire others with their stories and experiences. Being strong in character, they bring out the fighter in others as well.
· They have winning attitudes. Attitudes are more important than skills. Skills can be learned over time; attitudes are deeply-ingrained. Indeed, attitude is everything.

As mentioned before, becoming a millionaire is no overnight success. It took years for the world’s richest people to be where they are right now. If there’s anything to be learned about millionaires, it is that it is not their wealth that sets them apart from the rest of the world but what they did to earn those millions that truly stands out.

Who does not know this popular game show? Parallel to the game’s mechanics where your chance at the million depends on your correct answers, becoming a millionaire in real life depends on your responses to life’s myriad challenges and opportunities.

Dr. Philip E. Humbert, personal success coach, outlines The Top 10 Steps to Becoming a Millionaire, as follows:

1. Decide to be financially successful. Becoming a millionaire is seldom a matter of luck; it usually requires hard work and a lot of discipline. The very first step to becoming a millionaire is to make a personal commitment that this is what you want and be positive that it will happen someday.
2. Understand how money works. This means being financially literate – knowing the language of money, learning how to read numbers and comprehending basic accounting terms. Millionaires spend a great deal of time on their finances so it would be smart to emulate them. Read books. Take formal courses. The Internet offers a wealth of information on personal finance than you can imagine.
3. Master your relationship with money. Some people spend to feel good, others to show off. Take time to understand what your relationship with money is. Be in control of your money and not the other way around.
4. Set specific goals. Millionaires look at the big picture. They set challenging goals for themselves and are determined to reach them. They are not swayed by small temptations that crop up along the way and are able to resist instant gratification for long-term gain.
5. Develop a budget. A budget is like a map to your desired destination. It allows you to buy things that you really need and eliminate the unnecessary expenses.
6. Reduce spending. No matter what you make, you have to spend less than you earn or you will move backwards financially. A study of millionaires by Dr. Thomas J. Stanley and Dr. William D. Danko in the bestselling Book, The Millionaire Next Door, reveals that most millionaires surprisingly live frugal lifestyles. They wear simple clothes, drive simple cars, live in simple houses and yet you will realize that they are millionaires judging from the size of their bank accounts and stock portfolios.
7. Begin saving and investing. Becoming a millionaire is not an overnight success. It takes a long process of saving habitually and making smart investments. Compound interest is a powerful force that you would want to work for you.
8. Increase assets. Instead of striving to increase your income, work on having the right mix of stocks, bonds and real estate – assets that will make you rich and, unlike money, are hard to spend on a whim.
9. Reduce taxes. With all purchases being taxed, tax can easily be your largest expense. The wealthy know that there are legal and appropriate ways to shelter their income from taxes, to invest in socially responsible ways and that the tax code encourages this. For example, if the maturity of your time deposit is five years and one day, it is tax-exempt. You should thus learn the tax laws and use them for your benefit.
10. Use your wealth wisely. Studies show that giving to charitable causes and wealth are complementary. Being greedy and selfish will, in fact, draw money away from you. Giving, sharing and helping others will attract more. When you use your money to make a difference in people’s lives and create a positive impact in the world that you live in, you will be rewarded a hundredfold. Just by sharing these pieces of advice to others is a good start in itself.

So, are you ready to be a millionaire? I say you go, go, go for it!

There are many things we spend money on that we don’t really need. Let’s take a careful look at the items on the list and see if we can make some cuts into our discretionary spending:

· Coffee – Indeed, coffee can be addicting. However, coffee bought outside, whether in coffee shops, restaurants or from vending machines is invariably priced higher than when it is prepared at home.
· Soda and bottled beverages – We’re simply taking too much of these sugary drinks than we ought to. Water is healthier and is still the best when it comes to quenching thirst.
· Bottled water – This certainly has to be the most overpriced consumer good around. Water is a free resource and should not be bought. Water can be filtered at home so it is just as safe. Those of us traveling long hours to and from work can just bring a water bottle filled with filtered water.
· Dining out – This should be an occasional practice than routine. Imagine spending an average of P100 a day for lunch. Multiplying it by twenty-two working days in a month and twelve months in a year translates to P26,400 slashed off our annual income for lunch expenses alone. This amount can be significantly reduced if we take time to cook our own food at home.
· Precut and prepackaged food – This includes sliced vegetables and fruits and deboned meat that are fairly easy to prepare ourselves.
· Nutritional supplements – The protein powders and sports drinks advertised on TV are mostly overpriced and are mediocre sources of nourishment compared to fresh food.
· Styrofoam cups – Do we really need to buy a stack for our coffee drinking sessions when we can use instead our personal mugs? Aside from being harmful to the environment, Styrofoam can also be dangerous to health as there is a possibility of the chemicals in the Styro leaching into our food and drinks.
· Plastic bags – There’s just too much disposable plastic around us that clogs our drainage systems. It is better to use reusable containers for carrying our food and reusable bags when doing our groceries.
· Magazine subscriptions – Magazines either give us new insights or sit decoratively on our tables or shelves. If we’re guilty of the latter, we should consider cutting our subscriptions. Besides, we can have access to the same in the library or by browsing online publications in the Internet.
· TV packages – Cable and satellite TV programming are getting increasingly expensive. If you’re not a sports or movie nut, chances are you don’t need the added expense.
· Gym memberships – Many pay for expensive gym memberships that they are not able to maximize. We are lucky to have our own gym in the office so we should make the most of it.
· Car maintenance at the dealership – Unless our cars are brand new and still under warranty, going to the dealership for repairs is a sure way to overspend. Dealerships prey on the fear of car owners that other repair shops can’t do the same job and so are able to charge outrageously high prices.
· Alcohol and tobacco – People smoke and drink for various reasons. Quitting is never easy but thinking about their precarious effects on your health should help.
· Sale items – Just because we are overwhelmed with the big discounts does not mean we have to purchase items on sale, especially those that we don’t have immediate need of or those we probably already have. By the way, SM Malls’ 3- day sale starts today so here’s hoping we can have a little self-control when we pass by there.

Having just enough of some of the items listed above may not hurt our pocket too much. Making a few cuts here and there from our regular list of expenses will surprisingly provide a good amount of savings in a month’s time – more so in a year’s time.

As what Dave Ramsey, author of the Best Selling Book, The Total Money Makeover, said “Winning at money is 80 percent behavior and 20 percent head knowledge.” Learning the habit of saving does not only provide us a better future financially. Along with it, we also develop discipline, perseverance, frugality and contentment — qualities and values which will not only be helpful in building savings. These values also help build a good character.

Let us take a moment checking these items, as this can give us a good start, if we haven’t begun yet with building our savings. Happy saving!
